  • Wellness exams are recommended once a year for younger animals who are healthy, and more frequently for seniors and those with chronic health conditions.

During a wellness exam, we will perform a thorough physical examination to ensure that your pet’s health is functioning properly. We’ll go over topics, such as immunizations, parasite control, diet and weight management, behavior, and other topics that are important to keeping your loved one well and happy. Because each animal is unique, the information gained through regular checkups helps us establish a baseline of what is “normal” for your pet. We will then customize a preventive plan for your pet that considers their specific health and lifestyle. This preventative plan includes vaccinations and parasite control.

For senior pets and pets with existing health conditions, wellness exams are part of chronic disease surveillance and monitoring. Expect our wellness appointments to take 30 minutes to ensure your pet receives the comprehensive care they deserve.

If you are a new client or are bringing your new pet to see us, please forward a copy of any records for your pet to us prior to the appointment so we have time to review their file in ensuring customized care.

  • Our vaccination protocols are intended to maximize protection for your specific pet. We follow the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WASAVA) guidelines and adapt them to your cat or dog.

For puppies and kittens, we recommend 3 sets of boosters spaced 3- to 6-weeks apart starting around 8 weeks of age, followed by annual exams and vaccines.

Our recommended vaccines for dogs include: the DAPP vaccine (distemper, parvovirus, canine adenovirus, canine parainfluenza, Bordetella, and rabies.

Our recommended vaccines for cats include: the upper respiratory complex, feline distemper, and rabies. The feline leukemia virus vaccine is recommended for cats considered higher risk for this disease.

If your pet requires specific vaccines for travelling abroad, please provide prior notice in order that we can arrange to have the vaccines that your pet requires.

  • We offer general soft tissue surgery, including spays and neuters, removal of lumps and bumps, bladder stone removal, and other procedures.

For spays and neuters, we recommend around 6 months of age – or slightly older for giant breeds. We offer package pricing that includes the pre-surgical exam, bloodwork, IV fluids and pain medication to go home. This package ensures best practice on our end and simplifies decision making for you. Spays and neuters are “day procedures” and booked Monday to Friday. Pets are dropped off first thing in the morning and pick up is at the end of the day. Please enquire if you require “day-before” drop-off.

There are many reasons to spay and neuter your pet:

    • Prevents/reduces marking behavior and aggression in males.

    • Decreases risk of prostate infection and prostate enlargement in males.

    • Prevents testicular cancer in males.

    • Prevents heat cycle and pregnancy in females.

    • Prevents/reduces uterine cancer in infection in females.

    • Reduces risk of breast cancer.

We understand that there can be anxiety related to surgery for your pet and are happy to tour you through our surgical suite and review our procedures with you prior to booking in surgery. Call us for spay/neuter quotes. For other soft tissue surgical procedures, we may require seeing your pet prior to ensure an accurate estimate.

Should your pet require orthopedic surgery or other advanced surgical procedures, we will refer you to a board-certified veterinary surgeon to ensure the best outcome for your pet.

  • Oral health affects the overall health of our pets. At 8th Street Pets & Vets, we take a comprehensive approach to oral health. We start with showing you how to brush your pet’s teeth, provide recommendations for at-home oral health care products, and provide routine dental checks as part of wellness exams. We offer routine dental cleanings along with major dental procedures.

Dr. Cemaine has 14-years of experience performing pet dentals and understands that many of our dental patients are geriatrics and have other concurrent conditions. Because dental cleanings and extractions are performed under anesthesia, all of our quotes include a pre-anesthetic exam and bloodwork, IV fluids, and any required take-home medications. Dental x-rays are always included to ensure diseases occurring below the gumline are detected and addressed at the same time. Quotes for dental procedures are provided at no charge and are booked with our veterinary technologists. For new patients, we ask that you please bring a long a copy of your pet’s prior veterinary record to the dental quote appointment.

  • We make it easy for you to obtain your pet’s prescription medications with extended and weekend hours. If the medication you require is one that we do not currently have in stock, please allow up to 36 hours to fill the first prescription.

To fill prescriptions from other clinics, we require an original prescription (or prescription transfer) in one of the following formats:

    • Written prescription on paper with the prescribing veterinarian’s signature.

    • Electronic prescription sent directly from the prescribing veterinarian/clinic. These can be emailed to info@8thstpetsvets.com

    • Telephone prescription called in directly by your veterinarian.

Prescriptions for controlled drugs must be sent directly from your prescribing veterinarian/clinic and must have an original prescriber’s signature.

Our veterinary pharmacy service is available to all pets in Saskatchewan! Talk to us about shipping to areas in Saskatchewan serviced by Canada Post Purolator service.
